How CSI scores are calculated

The open-data MVP publishes its formula so researchers can see what the score measures, what it leaves out, and when a conference is not ready for a numeric score.

Primary formula

The headline score is CSI-Median-H. It compares the median h-index of verified plenary and keynote speakers with an open-data field baseline.

The headline score uses the median because a single highly cited speaker should not dominate the conference score.

This keeps the original CSI concept visible, but it is not the headline score for the MVP.

Role-specific values appear only when there are enough verified records for that role.

Field Citation Baseline

An open-data estimate of typical citation intensity in the conference's subject area, calculated from leading journals and scholarly sources in that field.

The MVP baseline is built from OpenAlex source-level citation intensity data. We use the neutral term Field Citation Baseline because the open-data MVP is not using Clarivate Journal Impact Factor data.

Each baseline record stores the selected source set, method version, capture date, and calculation inputs so the denominator can be checked later.

Minimum speaker threshold

A numeric CSI score requires at least 6 verified plenary or keynote speakers.

This rule avoids unstable scores based on one or two prominent speakers.

Coverage and confidence

Coverage shows how much of the listed plenary/keynote speaker set could be verified and matched to an author metric. Low coverage means the CSI should be read cautiously.

Confidence summarizes the reliability of the evidence behind the score. It combines source quality, author-match certainty, metric freshness, and independent verification; it is not a measure of conference quality.
